2. What instrument do you audition on?
You choose the section that you are interested in. After the audition process, your performance will be evaluated and your position within the group will be determined. We encourage EVERYONE to stay and participate in the line regardless of whether or not you are chosen for your first-choice instrument. There is a place for you to contribute in the line.

3. Do you supply the instruments?
We supply each student with an instrument. You are only required to bring the sticks and/or mallets that are necessary for your instrument.

4. Do you need to have Drum Line experience?
No. We do not turn anyone away if they have the desire to be in the group. You WILL be asked to demonstrate basic music and movement skills at the audition, but your success is based upon your ability to LEARN. We simply ask that you aspire to be a MUSICIAN! It is common for instrumentalists from various disciplines to join the percussion section. A musical approach to any instrument definitely translates to our idiom. There are sections (cymbals, mallet ensemble, auxiliary percussion) where your skills are needed. Beginners are also encouraged to gain experience in these sections. The more advanced sections of the line (bass drum, snare and tenor) do have special demands, and thus experience is necessary. We do ask that those members have open minds however, because we have a technique and style that is uniquely ours.

5. What should I wear to the audition?
You should wear clothing that you are cool and comfortable in. We recommend that you bring water and a healthy snack for endurance. There will be a lunch break on Saturday.

6. If you are unable to make it to the audition can you send a video tape?
Clearly, attending the audition is preferred but in the event that no other option is available you may submit a video tape. The tape must include basic stroke fundamentals; legato, staccato, accent tap, double and triple beat, flams and rolls. Include a solo that you have prepared on your respective instrument. Please feel comfortable including pieces from your past performances (state solo and ensemble, indoor drum line, or corps) along with a short interview about yourself. Please send your video to the following address:

School of Music

Please contact the Drum Line Director before send tapes!
