Assistant Director of Athletic Bands

John Schnettler is the Assistant Director of Athletic Bands at the University of South Florida. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Central Florida, and a Master of Music in Conducting from USF. His duties at USF include: Assistant Director of the USF ‘Herd of Thunder’ Marching Band, Director of the USF Concert Band, Director of the USF Basketball Band, guest conducting the USF Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band, and teaching undergraduate courses in Conducting and Music Education. Mr. Schnettler is also a faculty advisor for the Upsilon Psi chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia.
Before joining the faculty at USF, Mr. Schnettler was a Band Director at the middle and high school levels in Florida and Georgia. During his public school career, he was recognized as an outstanding educator, including “Arts Teacher of the Year”. His bands received numerous accolades and high ratings, many were for the first time in school history. Mr. Schnettler started a Jazz Band program in all of the schools he taught, one of which opened for the Count Basie Orchestra. He spent his summers as a Brass Instructor for the Magic of Orlando and Teal Sound Drum and Bugle Corps.
Outside of USF, Mr. Schnettler is an active adjudicator, guest conductor, and honor band clinician. Mr. Schnettler has studied wind band conducting with William Wiedrich, Richard Greenwood, and John Whitney, and has participated in conducting clinics throughout the country.
Mr. Schnettler holds memberships in Phi Mu Alpha, Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Kappa Phi, CBDNA, ITG, MENC, and FMEA.
